Cleaning After Summer Guests
Your beach house just hosted a week of family, a Fourth of July party, or a summer rental guest. Now it needs to be reset — fast. Here's how to deep clean efficiently and get your Long Island getaway back to its best.
The Post-Guest Assessment
Before diving in, walk through the entire house and make note of what needs attention. Look for:
- Stains on upholstery, carpets, or linens (treat immediately)
- Sand accumulation in entryways, bathrooms, and bedrooms
- Refrigerator contents — what needs to be tossed?
- Trash that didn't make it to the bin
- Damage that needs repair (note for later)
- Missing items — towels, remotes, kitchen tools
Room-by-Room Deep Clean
- Strip ALL bedding — sheets, pillowcases, mattress protectors, duvet covers
- Check mattresses for stains and treat immediately with enzyme cleaner
- Vacuum mattresses and flip/rotate if possible
- Dust all surfaces including headboards and nightstands
- Vacuum floors thoroughly — guests track sand everywhere
- Clean mirrors and any glass surfaces
- Empty and wipe out all drawers and closets
- Check under beds for forgotten items (and trash)
- Remake beds with fresh linens
For mattress stains, see our mattress stain removal guide.
- Remove all used towels and bath mats
- Clean and disinfect toilets inside and out
- Scrub showers and tubs — pay attention to soap scum and hard water buildup
- Clean shower doors or curtains (wash fabric curtains)
- Wipe down vanities and sinks
- Clean mirrors — sunscreen and product splatter are common
- Scrub floors, especially around toilets and in corners
- Restock toilet paper, soap, and toiletries
- Check drains — hair clogs are common after multiple guests
Hard water buildup? See our LI hard water solutions guide.
- Empty refrigerator completely — toss anything questionable
- Clean refrigerator shelves, drawers, and walls
- Clean oven and stovetop (spills happen during vacation cooking)
- Run dishwasher empty with cleaning tablet
- Wipe down all cabinet fronts — greasy fingerprints accumulate
- Clean inside microwave
- Sanitize countertops and backsplash
- Clean sink and garbage disposal (ice + lemon refresh)
- Take out all trash and recycling
- Mop floors — sticky spills are common
- Check pantry for expired items or pests
For detailed kitchen guidance, see our kitchen deep cleaning guide.
- Vacuum all upholstery — lift cushions and vacuum underneath
- Check for stains and treat with appropriate cleaner
- Fluff and arrange throw pillows
- Dust all surfaces, shelves, and decor
- Clean TV screen and remotes (remotes are germ hotspots)
- Vacuum or mop all floors
- Clean sliding door tracks — sand accumulates here
- Wash any throw blankets
- Check game closet / entertainment area for missing pieces
- Shake out and wash entry mats
- Vacuum/sweep all sand (there will be a lot)
- Wipe down hooks, bench, and shoe storage
- Clean any outdoor shower area
- Wash beach towels left behind
- Organize beach gear — chairs, umbrellas, toys
- Mop hard floors
For ongoing sand management, see our beach house cleaning guide.
The Often-Forgotten Spots
After guests leave, these areas are frequently overlooked but desperately need attention:
- Light switches and door handles: Wipe down with disinfectant
- Remote controls: Clean with disinfecting wipe
- Outdoor furniture: Rinse off sunscreen residue and sand
- Grill: Clean grates and empty grease trap
- Coffee maker: Run a cleaning cycle
- Washer and dryer: Check for forgotten items, wipe down
- Under couch cushions: You'll find surprises
- Deck/patio: Sweep and hose down
- Pool house: Quick clean if applicable — see our pool house guide
Before your next guests arrive (or before you settle in yourself), leave the house for 30 minutes, then come back in. A fresh nose will catch any lingering odors you've gone "nose blind" to — musty closets, garbage disposal smells, or that sunscreen-and-sand beach house funk.
Laundry Strategy
Post-guest laundry can be overwhelming. Here's how to tackle it efficiently:
- Sort as you strip: Whites, colors, towels, delicates
- Start with sheets: They take longest to dry
- Towels second: Wash on hot with a cup of white vinegar to remove any mildew smell
- Beach towels separate: They're often sandy and can damage your washer
- Shower curtains: Machine wash (check label) with towels for scrubbing action
Treating Common Post-Guest Stains
Summer guests leave summer stains. Act fast on these common culprits:
- Sunscreen on upholstery: Dish soap + warm water, blot don't rub. See our sunscreen stain guide
- Red wine on carpet: Salt to absorb, then club soda. See our red wine stain guide
- Grease on fabric: Dish soap or cornstarch to absorb, then launder
- Makeup on towels: Micellar water or makeup remover before washing
- Grass stains: White vinegar, then launder
End-of-Season Deep Clean
After Labor Day, when summer season ends, give your beach house a thorough cleaning before closing up:
- All the above, plus...
- Clean behind and under all furniture
- Wash all windows inside and out
- Clean ceiling fans and light fixtures
- Deep clean carpets (consider professional cleaning)
- Clean outdoor furniture and store properly
- Empty ALL food from pantry and refrigerator
- Run cleaning cycles on all appliances
- Check for any needed repairs before winter
