Bay Shore's history stretches back over 300 years. In 1708, local school teacher John Mowbray purchased this land from the Secatogue Indians for "several eel spears." The hamlet went through many names—Penataquit, Awixa, Mechanicsville—before becoming Bay Shore in 1868. The nearby Sagtikos Manor, built in 1697, is the oldest house in the Town of Islip; George Washington stayed there during his 1790 tour of Long Island.
By the late 1800s, Bay Shore had earned the nickname "The Garden Spot of Long Island"—a resort destination where affluent New Yorkers escaped the city via the new Long Island Rail Road. The Dominy House, Prospect House, and Cortland House hotels lined Main Street.
