From Little Cow Harbor to Gold Coast Gem
The Matinecock Indians were Centerport's earliest residents, settling near the waterfront at the head of Northport Harbor. Around 1700, European settlers called this place "Little Cow Harbor"—the name referring to its position between the larger harbors of Huntington and Northport. In 1836, it was renamed Centreport (later Centerport after 1895), acknowledging its geographic position midway between the east and west boundaries of Huntington.
The early 20th century brought the Gold Coast era, and Centerport attracted wealth and culture. William Kissam Vanderbilt II built his 43-acre Eagle's Nest estate here—now the Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium. Even composer Sergei Rachmaninoff spent two summers in Centerport. In 1888, Camp Alvernia was established as the first Catholic summer camp in the United States, still serving local children today.
