East Islip's story begins on November 29, 1683, when English aristocrat William Nicoll purchased 51,000 acres from the Secatogue Indians. He built his mansion, Islip Grange, near what's now Heckscher State Park—naming it after his family's ancestral estate in Northampshire, England. For nearly two centuries, the area was simply called "East of Islip" until residents officially adopted the current name on January 16, 1890.
East Islip was once a Gold Coast enclave for America's wealthiest families. Harry K. Knapp built the 41-room Brookwood Hall in 1903—now home to the Islip Art Museum and Town offices. Henry B. Hollins, a J.P. Morgan partner, owned the 600-acre Meadow Farm estate. Charles L. Lawrance, who designed the engine for Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis, lived on a 116-acre waterfront estate that became The Moorings. Today's East Islip retains that character in neighborhoods like Heckscher Estates, Deer Run, and Country Village. We've been cleaning these homes since 2013.
