Originally known as Head of the Harbor, St. James took its current name in 1853 when local Episcopalians organized St. James Church of Smithtown. The following year, the Federal Government opened a post office and named the district St. James after the church. The 1857 St. James General Store—built by Ebenezer Smith, a descendant of Smithtown founder "Bull" Smith—still operates today as the oldest continuously running general store in America, earning a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
When the Long Island Rail Road arrived in 1872, everything changed. The area south of North Country Road earned the nickname "Boomertown" for its rapid development. By the early 20th century, St. James had become a glamorous retreat—summer residents included the Barrymores (Lionel, Ethel, and John), Buster Keaton, Myrna Loy, and Irving Berlin. Legendary architect Stanford White called St. James home. Today, that same small-town charm draws families who want community without sacrificing quality.
