Move In/Out Cleaning Guide
Moving is stressful enough. Get your full deposit back when moving out and start fresh when moving in with our complete cleaning checklists.
Move-Out vs. Move-In Cleaning
Move-out cleaning focuses on getting your deposit back—deep cleaning everything landlords inspect, including inside appliances, cabinets, and hidden areas. Move-in cleaning focuses on sanitizing your new space before your belongings arrive, especially kitchens and bathrooms where you'll store food and personal items. Both require cleaning empty rooms, which is the best time for a thorough clean.
The Moving Cleaning Timeline
When to start cleaning tasks for a stress-free move.
Two Weeks Before
Book professional cleaning if using one. Start decluttering and donate/discard items you won't take. Deep clean items as you pack them.
One Week Before
Clean inside kitchen appliances (oven, fridge, dishwasher). Clean rooms as they're emptied. Gather cleaning supplies.
2-3 Days Before
Deep clean bathrooms. Clean inside all cabinets and closets. Wipe down walls and baseboards. Clean windows and blinds.
Moving Day
Final sweep/vacuum and mop all floors after furniture is out. Do a final walkthrough. Take photos of every room for your records.
What Landlords Check
Focus your cleaning efforts on the areas that most commonly cause deposit deductions.
Oven & Stovetop
Baked-on grease is the #1 deposit deduction. Clean inside oven, burner grates, drip pans, and behind the range.
Refrigerator Inside
Empty completely, remove shelves and drawers to wash, clean door seals, and don't forget the freezer. Pull out and clean behind.
Bathroom Grout & Caulk
Moldy grout and discolored caulk are immediate red flags. Scrub tile grout and clean or note existing caulk issues.
Inside Cabinets
Landlords open every cabinet. Wipe down all shelves, clean cabinet faces, and check for shelf liner that needs replacing.
Light Fixtures & Fans
Dusty fixtures are obvious and easy to clean. Remove glass covers to wash, wipe fan blades, and replace any burnt bulbs.
Baseboards & Walls
Scuffs and marks on walls, dusty baseboards, and nail holes beyond normal wear may be deducted. Wipe and touch up.
Windows & Blinds
Clean window glass inside and out, wipe tracks, dust or wash blinds. Check that all blinds work properly.
Closets & Storage
Empty completely, vacuum floors, wipe shelves and rods. Check for forgotten items and remove any shelf paper.
Floors Throughout
Vacuum all carpets and mop hard floors. Address any stains. Clean in corners and along edges where dirt collects.

Clean Empty Rooms
Always clean after furniture is removed. You'll have full access to corners, walls, and floors that were previously hidden.
Take Photos
Document the condition of every room before and after cleaning. These photos protect you in deposit disputes.
Check Your Lease
Review what your lease specifically requires. Some have carpet cleaning clauses or specific appliance requirements.
Don't Forget the Outside
Clean your patio, balcony, or storage unit. Remove all belongings and sweep. These areas are often overlooked.
Request a Walkthrough
Ask your landlord for a pre-move-out inspection. This gives you a chance to address issues before the final walkthrough.
Consider Professionals
Professional move-out cleaning often pays for itself in deposit savings. Get a receipt to show landlords the space was professionally cleaned.
