Kitchen Deep Clean for Moving
The kitchen gets the most scrutiny during move-out inspections. Landlords check inside appliances, under the sink, and in every cabinet. Whether you're moving in or out, this guide covers every surface.
Why Kitchen Cleaning Matters Most
Kitchens accumulate more buildup than any other room: grease on range hoods, spills in refrigerators, burnt food in ovens. Landlords know this, which is why they spend more time inspecting the kitchen than any other area. According to the New York Attorney General, cleaning costs are a legitimate deposit deduction.
The good news: a thorough kitchen clean takes about 1.5-2 hours. That investment can save you hundreds in deposit deductions.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to deep clean a kitchen for moving?
A thorough kitchen deep clean takes approximately 1.5-2 hours. This includes cleaning inside all appliances (oven, refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher), range hood, cabinets, drawers, counters, sink, and floor. Add extra time if appliances are heavily soiled or haven't been cleaned recently.
What kitchen areas do landlords check most during move-out inspection?
Landlords focus on: inside the oven (most common deduction), inside the refrigerator including behind it, stovetop drip pans, range hood filter, inside all cabinets and drawers, under the sink area, and the floor under appliances. These are the spots most tenants miss.
How do I clean a really dirty oven for move-out?
Remove oven racks and spray interior with oven cleaner (or make a paste of baking soda and water). Let sit 20-30 minutes or overnight for heavy buildup. While waiting, soak drip pans and grates. Wipe out oven interior with damp cloths (multiple passes). Clean door inside and between glass panels if accessible. Scrub racks and replace.
Should I replace drip pans when moving out?
If drip pans are beyond cleaning (heavily burnt, warped, or permanently stained), replacing them is smart. A set costs $10-15 and prevents a larger deduction. Many landlords consider stained drip pans as damage rather than normal wear. New drip pans make the whole stovetop look well-maintained.
Where is the refrigerator drip pan and should I clean it?
The drip pan is located underneath the refrigerator, usually accessible from the front behind a kick plate or by pulling out the fridge. It collects condensation and is often filthy and forgotten. Pull out the fridge, locate the pan, and clean or replace it. This is a spot landlords specifically check.
